The Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB) participates in several scholarship programmes which offer grants at different levels of study, from Bachelor to Academic staff, and this in various regions, for long and short stays

Below you will find an overview of the different scholarship programmes which are currently available.

The Master Mind Scholarships Fellowship Programme for Excellent Students is a scholarship programme offered by the Flemish government aiming to promote the internationalisation of the Flemish higher education.

Please note that you need to have applied for a place at the VUB and have received an offical letter of acceptance, issued by the VUB Education and Student Administration Office, before you can apply for the scholarship.

Who can apply?

  • Citizenship: all nationalities, with the exception of students having graduated from a Flemish Higher Education Institution and students who are currently enrolled at a Flemish Higher Education Institution
  • Study fields: Please contact international.relations@vub.ac.be for more information
  • Required degree: Bachelor/undergraduate degree
  • Other (pre-existence of bilateral agreements, etc): 

- Official letter of acceptance issued by the Education and Student Administration Office at the VUB is needed before one can apply for the scholarship

- Minimum CGPA of 3 out of 4 (https://www.foreigncredits.com/resources/gpa-calculator/)

- Passing an English language test is compulsory: TOEFL iBT minimum 94, IELTS academic module minimum Band 7 or CAE minimum level C1

What does the scholarship cover?

  • Tuition fee/tuition waiver: Tuition fee is limited to amount paid by Flemish scholarship student
  • Duration (in months or weeks)? Duration of the Master program (if 2-year Master: second year conditional)
  • Health insurance included ? No 
  • Flight (per year or total for the period)? No
  • Language preparation courses (up to X weeks or amount)? No

  2. Only students having received an offical letter of acceptance issued by the VUB-Education and Student Administration Office can apply for the scholarship
  3. Application deadline for a Master Mind scholarship is midnight 15 March GMT+1
  4. Application package should contain:

    a. application form (can be obtained by sending email to international.relations@vub.ac.be)

    b. copy of the letter of acceptance issued by the VUB-Education and Student Administration Office

    c. copy of acquired degree(s) and Transcript(s) of records; if written in another language than Dutch, English or French, a certified translation into one of these languages must be enclosed

    d. copy of official language test (TOEFL, IELTS or CAE) - passing a language test is compulsory

    e. letter of motivation (max 2 A4 pages)

    f. two letters of recommendation from professors of your (previous) Home university, written in English

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel will nominate maximum 20 students for selection to the Flemish Ministry of Education.

The EU program 'Erasmus+ Key Action 1' offers individual students the opportunity to study abroad for a period of 3-12 months for studies or 2-12 months for a traineeship. Students can undertake this mobility at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level for a max. total of 12 months per study cycle.  This is for all fields of study

Who can apply?

Bachelor exchange/Master exchange/PhD exchange

  • Citizenship: Students studying at a program country HEI that holds an ECHE and has (an) inter institutional Erasmus+ agreement(s) with the VUB, for a specific field of study and level. Students studying at a partner country HEI should contact their International office at home to know if such possibilities exist

  • Required degree: As per academic program requirements
  • Other (pre-existence of bilateral agreements, etc): Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreement with VUB, for specific field of study and level, required

How to apply?

  1. Home university officially nominates the student for studies or a training on exchange.incoming@vub.be
  2. The VUB sends the nominated students the link to the online application form, where they have to upload the required application documents (motivation letter, transcripts of records, proof of language knowledge, proof of health insurance, copy ID-card, passport photo) and fill in their Learning/Training Agreement.

  • Spring semester: nomination : 1 October X -  application:  1 November X 

Late and/or incomplete applications are not considered.

The Ministry of Education of Peru, through its programme 'Becas Presidente de la Republica',  finances full-time:

  • Master studies at VUB to Peruvian professionals with both high academic performance and low income, for 1 to 2 academic years
  • PhD studies at VUB to Peruvian professionals with both high academic performance and low income, for up to 4 academic years.

The focus is on Science and Technology, plus Education

Who can apply?

Master degree/PhD degree

  • Citizenship: Citizens from Peru, who are living in Peru at the time of application
  • Study fields:
  1. Priority study fields: Biology, biotechnology, nanotechnology, camelids, material science and technology, environment science and technology, earth sciences, forestry, food technbology, ICT, physics, chemistry, mathematics, pharmacy, biochemistry, engineering (all).
  2. Non priority study fields: supply chain, health sciences, public administration, public policy, public management, economy, education. 
  • Required degree: Bachelor degree Master degree

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel will grant several full scholarships of €10,000 per year to students of the European Master of Science in Photonics at VUB. This scholarship is foreseen to cover cost of living inherent to studying in Brussels. Every application will be screened on the basis of excellence and motivation.

All candidates enrolling at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will have the opportunity to show proof of their technical knowledge during the application interview preceding the final admission. The scholarships will be awarded by the VUB programme chair.

B-PHOT Excellence Scholarships 
B-PHOT, Brussels Photonics Research group at VUB, offers also scholarships to knowledgeable students on a competitive basis. All students who register for the MSc. in Photonics at VUB are eligible to be awarded a B-PHOT Excellence Scholarship by the researach group without a separate application procedure.The candidates who receive the B-PHOT Excellence Scholarship must commit themselves to do a M.Sc. thesis at VUB. Students who graduate with honours and show excellence in knowledge and applications, will be invited to apply for a PhD at VUB B-PHOT.

The B-PHOT Excellence Scholarship scheme is as follows:

Three Entry Scholarships  of €1,000 at the beginning of the first semester of the first year of the MSc.. The recipients are the 3 best ranked students according to our selection criteria.

Three Continuation Scholarships  of €1,500 at the start of the second semester of the first year of the M.Sc. will be awarded to the top 3 students according to the academic performance after semester 1. Also students who didn’t receive the Entry Scholarship will be considered for the Continuation Scholarship.

One Excellence Scholarship  will be awarded worth €5,000 Euro at the start of the the second year of the M.Sc.

OAS/VUB Programme is a bilateral agreement between Organization of American States (OAS) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). It offers mobility for students wishing to pursue their Master at VUB for 1 to 2 years - depending on the Master Programme. Refer to the list on OAS website

Who can apply?

  • Citizenship: You have the nationality/permanent resident status from one of countries listed in this project. 
  • Study fields: All study fields 
  • Required degree: Bachelor Degree
  • Other (pre-existence of bilateral agreements, etc): Associate Partner in some EMA2 Projects

What does the scholarship cover?

  • Tuition fee/tuition waiver: Tuition Fee waiver for 15 top-ranked students per year)
  • Duration (in months or weeks)? 10 or 22 months
  • Health insurance included? No (but assistance)
  • Flight (per year or total for the period)? Yes (only one way for 3 students)
  • Language preparation courses (up to X weeks or amount)? No
  • Other: No subsistence fee

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from countries in Africa, Asia and Latin-America, to follow a training or master programme at a Flemish university or university college in Belgium. The training and master programmes are taught in English. These programmes, lasting one or two academic years, focus on specific problems of developing countries and/or are relevant to developing countries in a more general sense. 

Only applications to Master programs that are recognised and funded by VLIR-UOS will be considered.

  • Tuition fee/tuition waiver: Tuition fee equals fee to be paid by EEA students
  • Duration (in months or weeks)? Maximum of two academic years
  • Health insurance included? Yes
  • Flight (per year or total for the period)? Yes (one per year)
  • Language preparation courses (up to X weeks or amount)? No
  • Other: Family supplement, Accommodation allowance, Indirect Travel Costs, Installation Allowance, Didactic Allowance, Mailing Allowance.
